Prioritizing Your Goals

goal #1 goal #2 goal #3So, now that you’ve created your list of goals (short-term and long-term), how do you decide where to start? Are you wondering how to modify or adjust these goals to fit them into your already busy life? The key is to master prioritizing!

Prioritizing is defined as arranging a list of items in order of importance. Of course all of your goals are important; however, it would be impossible and overwhelming to find the time to make progress on all of them at the same time. You need to look at your list of goals and decide which goal is most important to you at this time in your life.

How to Prioritize Goals

Have you decided which long-term goal is most important to focus on for right now?

Once you have made that decision, it is time to start thinking about and establishing short-term goals that relate to that long-term goal. Short-term goals act as milestones along your timeline to help you reach your long-term goal. They should be smaller and easier to carry out than your long-term goal, but they should directly imapact your long-term goal.

As you accomplish short-term goals, they will give you a sense of success and motivate you to continue working toward your long-term goal. Don’t forget to reward yourself as you accomplish short and long-term goals!

Steps to Prioritize Goals

1.  Select the long-term goal that is most important to you currently.
2.  Create and start completing a list of short-term goals that will help you accomplish the long-term goal you have selected.
3.  As you start to complete those short-term goals and feel comfortable (not overwhelmed) with your progress, add additional long-term goals to begin working on.
4.  Remember to be flexible with your goals and their completion time frames. As your life changes, you may need to adjust the focus of your goals.
